Lake Moomaw is a very unique body of water for Virginia. I often compare it to a remote Canadian lake. The land is owned and run by the National Forest Service, the water is controlled by the Army Corp. of Engineers and the fishery is managed by the Virginia Game Dept. At full pool the 2,530 acre lake has an average depth of 80 feet and a shoreline of 43.5 miles. The lake was completed in 1979 and open to public in 1982, the deepest area is approx. 120 feet and is located near the Gathright dam.
Moomaw offers a full spectrum of fish habitat, with thick standing timber, rock ledges and points, pea size gravel flats, boulders and heavy vegetation in season. Spotting deer, turkeys and even bald eagles is commonplace, I have even heard the distant bugle of an elk on rare occasions. A truly beautiful and serene place to visit. Trout, smallmouth and yellow perch fishing is superb from late February into May. Moomaw also has a growing number of largemouth due to an increase of shallow water weed growth. Other notable species are black crappie, channel catfish, bluegill, shellcrackers and chain pickerel.
